Joe Tomaka, Ph.D., received his Baccalaureate degree from Geneseo State University (1987), and his Master’s (1990) and Ph.D. degrees (1993) in Social and Health Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Tomaka served as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso where he served as Chair of the Department of Health Promotion, Associate Dean for the College of Health Sciences, and Director of the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Ph.D. Program. In 2013, he moved to New Mexico State University where he is Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Health and Social Services. Over the years, fourteen awards worth over $5M have directly supported his research and health promotion activities. He has also mentored multiple undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D.–level theses and dissertations. His current research interests include assessment of individual differences in stress, appraisal, and coping, the use brief interventions for health risk reduction.
